ASTM B545 Test Specimens

Metaspec manufactures test specimens used in quality testing by ASTM B545, which covers electrodeposited coatings of tin on metal. The production or quality control requirements generally require that the tin-plated parts be tested for conformance to ASTM B545. However, some parts (due to shape or size) can't be tested. In those cases, the specification allows 'special specimens' that are plated together with the other parts and then tested at the end of the plating process for conformance.

  • Thickness (test per ASTM B487, B499, B504, B567, or B568 as applicable)

  • ASTM B545 Appendix X1 Mean Thickness

  • ASTM B571 Adhesion (see ASTM B545 Appendix X2)

  • ASTM B678 Solderability (see ASTM B545 Appendix X3)

  • Porosity and Gross Defects (test per ASTM B246, B809, or B545 Appendix X5 as applicable)
