ASTM D1002 Lap Shear Test Specimens

Lap shear test specimens used in ASTM D1002 (Apparent Shear Strength of Single-Lap-Joint Adhesively Bonded Metal Specimens by Tension Loading - Metal-to-Metal). This test measures the apparent shear strengths of adhesives for bonding metals. Two test specimens of the same size and material are overlapped on one end by a specific amount, then bonded together with glue or adhesive.

ASTM D1002 test specimens can be provided individually or as finger panels. Lap shear finger panels can have 3, 4 5, 6 or more specimens depending on customer requirements. The test specimens are usually 0.062" thick, but this can vary depending on the material or alloy. The individual test specimens are typically 1" x 4", but longer specimens (1” x 5.125”) are available to comply with MMM-A-132B; five-finger panel test specimens for D1002 measure 5.75" x 4". Five-finger panels are also available in the longer size (5.75” x 5.125”) for MMM-A-132B.

The standard lap shear test specimen materials recommended by the test method are:

  • C110 Copper
  • 2024 Aluminum
  • 1008/1010 Steel
  • 302 Stainless steel
  • 6AL4V Titanium

Lap shear test specimens are available in a wide range of alloys, including:

  • C260 Brass
  • 5052 Aluminum
  • 6061 Aluminum
  • 6063 Aluminum
  • 304/304L Stainless steel
  • A653-G90 Galvanized steel
  • ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene)
  • Acrylic
  • Glass
  • PC (polycarbonate)
  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride)
  • Wood (various species)

...and many other materials - just let us know what you need and we can make it for you.

ASTM D1002 test specimens are used in many other adhesive tests, including ASTM D2293, ASTM D2557, ASTM D3165, and MMM-A-132B.
