ASTM D522 Bend Test Panels

Test panels or substrates used in ASTM D522 (Mandrel Bend Test of Attached Organic Coatings). This test can be used to determine the percent of elongation of the coating or to rate the coating's resistance to cracking. When testing the coating's elongation, a cold-rolled steel panel 4" x 6" x 0.032" (22 gauge) is used.
 
When evaluating the coating's cracking resistance, other panel substrates may be used, such as steel, aluminum, or synthetic rubber. Because of the size constraints determined by the mandrel, the recommended panel size is 4" x 6" regardless of the substrate material, but the thickness may vary between less than 0.032" and up to 1/2".
