ASTM D665 & NACE TM0172 corrosion test spindle specimen with threaded end

ASTM D665 & NACE TM0172 Corrosion Test Rod

Steel test rods used in ASTM D665 rust-preventing characteristics of inhibited mineral oil in the presence of water testing; also called a corrosion protection test. The test procedure involves stirring the sample of mineral oil with the steel rod specimen. The test rod is cylindrical with a tapered end and threaded plug that attaches to the test rod assembly. The specimen is available with a 1/4-20 or M6-1.0 thread.

This test specimen is also used in other test methods, including NACE TM0172 (Determining Corrosive Properties of Cargoes in Petroleum Product Pipelines), ASTM D7548 (Accelerated Iron Corrosion in Petroleum Products), ASTM D7577 (Accelerated Iron Corrosion Rating of Denatured Fuel Ethanol), IP 135, and JIS K2510. ASTM D665 is also equivalent to ISO 7120 and DIN 51585.

Metaspec also makes ASTM D665 NACE test rod specimen holders (PTFE or acrylic - other materials on request). ASTM D665 defines two sizes of specimen holder, called Type 1 (12.7 mm base) and Type 2 (22.2 mm base). These holders have a threaded end for the test specimen. The other end of the holder, or the base, rests against the cover of the test beaker so that the test rod specimen is suspended in the test fluid.

Customized test specimens or specimen holders for modified versions of this test are available on request.
