FTM 3450 Test Specimens
Metal test specimens used in FTM 3450 (Bearing Deposition of Aviation Turbine Engine Lubricants). Each test specimen is a 3/4" diameter disk, 0.032" thick, with 1/4" center hole. The test method requires a set of five metal specimens in these materials: 2024 aluminum, 8Mn titanium (UNS R56080**), 99.9% pure silver, 1010 steel, and 301 stainless steel. The specimens are assembled and tested together as shown in Figure 3 of the test method.
These washer test specimens are similar to those used in ASTM D4636 Alternate 1.
**FTM 3450 specifies a Titanium test specimen that is UNS R56080, Titanium 8%Mn. Unfortunately, R56080 / 8Mn titanium is no longer commercially available. Back in 2018, Metaspec bought out the stock of the only supplier that had the material. That raw material supply has been gradually consumed in the years since.
Currently, we recommend CP Grade 2 AMS 4902 titanium as a substitute for the R56080 / 8Mn titanium. If you have any questions or would like to discuss other alternative titanium alloys, please contact us.
