MIL-PRF-83936 §4.4.3 Corrosion Test Specimens
Metal test specimens used in testing paint removers by MIL-PRF-83936 §4.4.3 (Corrosion). This test uses two specimens of five different alloys and surface treatments. Each specimen is 2" x 4" and is cleaned, deburred, and has a surface finish as indicated in the specification. The test panel alloys are listed in MIL-PRF-83936 Table II as follows:
- Aluminum (2024-T3) - as rolled surface finish
- Aluminum (2024-T3) - anodized per MIL-A-8625 Type II, Class 1
- Magnesium (AMS 4377) - chrome pickled per MIL-M-3171 Type III*
- Steel (AMS 5046) - as rolled surface finish
- Steel (AMS 5046) - cadmium plated per MIL-STD-870 Type II, Class 1
*Note that the MIL-M-3171 chrome pickle treatment specified in MIL-PRF-83936 is no longer used or commercially available in the US. Metaspec can provide untreated magnesium panels or an alternate surface treatment instead of MIL-M-3171.
