NACE SP0394 Test Specimens

These hot rolled carbon steel test specimens meet the requirements of NACE SP0394 section 3.5 (Quality Control of Plant-Applied Single-Layer Fusion-Bonded Epoxy (FBE) External Pipe Coatings). Test panels are abrasive blast cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP 5 / NACE No. 1 and NACE SP0287 using steel grit to a surface profile of 50-100 micron (2-4 mils). Surface profile ranges of 2-3 mils or 3-4 mils can be requested for no additional cost.

 

NACE SP0394 describes several different tests that use these blasted steel paint panels:

 

  • NACE SP0394 – Appendix F – Cathodic Disbondment Test (CDT) specimen. The standard CDT specimen is a 4 x 4 x 1/4 -inch carbon steel plate that is blast cleaned in accordance with SP0394 Section 3.5. 
  • NACE SP0394 – Appendix G – Coating Porosity Test (CPT) specimen. The standard CPT specimen is a 1 x 8 x ¼ - inch carbon steel bar that is blast cleaned in accordance with SP0394 Section 3.5. 
  • NACE SP0394 – Appendix H – Flexibility Test specimen. The standard flexibility test specimen is a 1 x 8 x ¼ - inch carbon steel bar that is blast cleaned in accordance with SP0394 Section 3.5.
  • NACE SP0394 – Appendix I – Impact Test specimen. The standard impact test specimen is a 4 x 4 x ¼ - inch carbon steel plate that is blast cleaned in accordance with SP0394 Section 3.5. 
  • NACE SP0394 – Appendix J – Hot Water Soak Test specimen. The standard hot water soak test specimen is a 4 x 4 x ¼ - inch carbon steel plate that is blast cleaned in accordance with SP0394 Section 3.5.

 

These test plates and bar specimens are typically supplied with a ¼-inch diameter hole near one corner for convenience in hanging during the coating process.
